What stays, and what goes?

We are entering a time in the COVID-19 pandemic when restrictions are slowly beginning to be lifted across the country. People are feeling many different ways about the current changes, what is at stake, and how their lives may feel differently. You may be asking….

What will this “new normal” be like?

The ability to stay open and curious at a time such as this is a gift.  We can strive to be present and see what unfolds, one day at a time.

We can also be mindful and take stock of our own lives during this period of transition. Perhaps you are beginning to contemplate and discern things like:

What do I miss about the way things used to be?

What don’t I miss?

What would I like to stay in my life, to become stronger and more deeply rooted?

What would I like to release from my life (or former life), to allow for new ways of being?

Even though it may not be possible to predict what the new normal will be like, I believe we can be active participants in creating the life we want moving forward.

Last year when I was approaching a grand pivot in my career, I had lunch with a dear friend who shared some advice that has stayed with me:

YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO LET GO OF THE OLD TO ALLOW NEW EXPERIENCES TO COME IN.

Letting go of the old is never easy. It’s rarely lighthearted or without deep thought and consideration. Releasing the old can be downright scary. Sometimes painful. Uncomfortable. It makes us uneasy.

Letting go of the old is kind of like when you’re all snuggled up under a blanket and you consciously choose to leave the warm blanket behind and venture out into the crisp, cold air. Do you really want to leave the blanket behind? Maybe the blanket is worn out. Maybe it’s not serving its purpose as well as it used to. Maybe it has become scratchy and thin over time…but nonetheless it is the current source of warmth you have and it’s hard to imagine what you might find if you leave it behind and venture out.

Still, we have to be willing to let go of the old to open ourselves up for new experiences to come in. We have to create space and make ourselves available for new possibilities.

Here are a few examples of how this might manifest in your life...

  • We have to release old ways of thinking for new ways of thinking to be possible.

  • We can choose to release old (sometimes harmful) relationships to allow new, nourishing ones to come in.

  • We have to be willing to ‘release’ a job in which we are overworked, overstressed, and undervalued in order to receive a job that is satisfying, meaningful, and makes us feel valued for our contributions.

  • We need to let go of old patterns to encourage new patterns to flourish.

  • We can let go of our commitment to staying “stuck” to allow movement and change to unfold.

So let’s muster up the courage together to ask ourselves some tough questions:

What are we willing to let go of, now that we have slowed down enough to see what we truly value and what holds less value in our lives?

What are we willing to commit more of our time, attention, and energy to as we move forward?
